Murals are so hot right now! Commissioning a mural for your home or office makes the whole space come alive!

I have painted many murals over the last few years and it is so amazing how much life they give a space. The above picture was for a client and the space was an apartment kitchen… well I would say this mural added some real excitement to a very typical functional space!

Here are some tips to make sure you have the best experience possible getting a mural in your home:

1. Double Check.

Make sure the artist you are interested in has done murals before. It is important to work with someone that can lead the process.

2. Know what you want.

When you are reaching out to the artist make sure you do your homework. Do not ask an artist for to create a piece in a style they do not typically work in.

As you begin communication about your piece the best thing to do is include pictures of their artwork that you just love and explain why. Is it the dark swoops, the texture, the figures pose? Don’t worry about sounding arty just by very specific about what it is that draws you to each piece and explain what you are looking for. Be very very specific and articulate this early on!! This is the key to success in this process.

The easiest and best commissions usually are based on a mural or artwork that has already created and can be altered or changed a bit for your mural. Then you know what you are getting.

Make sure you are honest with artist and more importantly with yourself! Communication is key!

3. Money, honey!

I recommend artists to price their murals by square foot and most do this. So make sure to measure your wall and give them exact measurements when you reach out. You can say upfront what your budget is and ask if this is possible. They may be able to create a less intricate mural design and be able to suit your large wall.

You will need to put down a 50% deposit to get the process going. Never ask for sketches or mock ups before. The artist needs to be paid for their time and once the commitment is there then you can ask for a mock up if you feel it is necessary.

Also be clear on your timeline and when the piece needs to be created for.

Murals truly make a space come alive. The key is to communicate your budget and tastes with the artist so they can create something that will be a prefect fit. If you have any more questions about this process, please send me an email! Happy to share more.
