How do I make my gallery wall unique? Have you heard of a woodcut?

Let’s get outside of the frame!

Gallery walls are such a great way to hang multiple pieces of art on one wall. They look amazing and allow you to mix and match original work and prints. This year I wanted to add even more shapes and sizes to my walls at home. I looked online for unique work to purchase and I didn’t find anything that I could not live without.

Then I had an “ah ha” moment… wait I am an artist!! What can I make?!?

And so my series called Woodcuts (click here to view) was born!

This has been such a fun series to create, not only have they made my home gallery walls unique they have also connected me back to my childhood. Growing up my mom taught children’s folk art classes out of our home and as the official helper I was sanding wood, assisting teaching classes and making craft kits. Our entire garage was a wood shop and painting was something I did everyday.

When I showed my mom my idea for Woodcuts, I immediately saw the excitement in her eyes. We have long since moved from my childhood home with the garage wood shop but my very resourceful mother has her ways and has been borrowing a friends’ shop to cut out my shapes. It was been so fun to work together again.

There are of course other ways to make your home gallery wall unique and different. Here are some ideas to get you started:

Mix Up Shapes!

Again make sure you don’t just have squares and rectangles use round frames, woodcuts, textile work etc. to give your gallery wall variety.

Frames

Use different fames (not too many) to give your gallery wall some variety. You can also include different materials for example in this photo we have the two framed work, the woodcut and the painting on canvas unframed. This makes our eye move across the wall.

Another great option is commission a small mural that is integrated into your gallery wall. This really brings out the work and ties the whole wall together!

Bits & Bobs

You can always create a wall of many small artwork. I highly suggest finding unique shapes and frames to tie them all together. This style is great for a smaller wall and can go from floor to ceiling.

I hope these ideas inspire you to look at your gallery walls differently! There is so much you can do in your own home to give your space a unique look and designer feel.

I am loving creating my new woodcut series. If you have an ideas for a new shape for the woodcuts, please reach out. I am always looking for new ideas and ways to push myself!
